[ profile] digitalemur, you will like this: Dolly Parton's cover of Collective Soul's "Shine." It works really well as a country/bluegrass tune.

"There's a divinity that shaped your end."

Who's got more?

(Yes, this is what my brain does when I'm tearing my hair out about dissertation work.)

Wait, Wait!

Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me is in town this weekend! I would have gone to see it live, but they are (a) way too pricey and (b) completely sold out. Darn. I'm still looking forward to their Current Location Shout Out at the beginning of the show.

From Justice Stevens's dissent:

"While American democracy is imperfect, few outside the majority of this Court would have thought its flaws included a dearth of corporate money in politics."

Great Rose Bowl. Go Buckeyes!

Different version of Hang On Sloopy. Bonus: rocking steel drum solo. Bonus number two: MARIMBA.

I like this tiny Weezer fan.

I don't care about it from Elizabeth Thompson on Vimeo.

And also this Ukrainian band's cover song.

It's "trick or treat" (no hyphens,) but hyphens are included in "trick-or-treaters" and "get-off-my-porch-you-little-brat."

When they die, zombies are no longer people. Use descriptors. "Fat zombie," "Hare Krishna zombie." But not "Bob the Zombie."

Capitalize titles when they precede a name. Ex., King Kong, Captain Crunch, Count Dracula, Kid Rock.

If you ever start a lede with "Webster's Dictionary defines..." you will be slapped. Seriously, cut that shit out.

Do not begin a sentence with the phrase "Um, actually..." because it makes you look like a dick.

The plural of 'dracula' is 'CHRIST GET OUT OF THERE!'

The noun "Wang Chung" should be capitalized, but not the verb.

Only use an interrobang under the advice of a qualified physician.

If accuracy / Is what you crave / Then you should call it / Myanmar Shave

...yeah. Fake AP Stylebook is my hero. I'm trying not to disturb my officemate by laughing.

Oh, this should be fun. No comments yet, but I'm wincing preemptively. Not that I'm not proud to be a male computer geek, but sometimes, seriously, to hell with male computer geeks.

"It was, of course, nothing more than sexism, the especially virulent type espoused by male techies who sincerely believe that they are too smart to be sexists." --Neal Stephenson, Snow Crash. Why isn't that one of the fortunes at the bottom of the page?

I had a dream the other day about a Yale Concert Band concert. The piece was entitled "Why Isn't The Raptor Hated Like Other Dinosaur Species?" The composer was "ACTUAL FOOTAGE OF..." something. (By the time I wrote it down, I was too awake to remember what came after ACTUAL FOOTAGE OF.) It There were two timpanists, one with four drums and the other with at least seven, so you know it must have been an awesome song.

There's a real Concert Band concert tomorrow that they will stream live here at 7:30 Eastern time. Although I think for that one you have to be awake.

Back in high school, I was in a real singing and dancing show choir for three years. In small-town Ohio, even. I like cheesy feel-good music-filled entertainment low on the realism scale. I liked Moulin Rouge. It seems like I should really like Glee.

So why does Glee irritate me so much? Is it the mercilessly auto-tuned voices? Is it the fact that no one is ever shown actually learning to sing? Is it the Sassy Black GirlTM whose first line is of course "Aww, hail to the naw"? I'm not sure, but I've seen three episodes and it still bugs me.

I'm reading a PDF paper about ef ciency, with lots of de nitions, in the eld of lazy programming languages. It mentions the very rst Haskell compiler ever built and expresses the hope that the work will some day nd its way into domain-speci c languages.

Yeah. Something in the toolchain is clueless about ligatures. (Probably ps2pdf and/or pdftex.) I hope this bug eventually gets xed.

Only two days until the -1st anniversary of Bionic Commando Day!

Here's last year's post about the -2nd anniversary. I won't be around, but I'll be celebrating in spirit.

No, I haven't played the modern remake yet. I'm sure it's great, but Sunday it's all about the NES version.
