Well, I tried out for Jesus Christ Superstar, and apparently I'm Peter. My friend from Yale who encouraged me to try out is Mary Magdalene. Awesome!

Even after I tried out, before I had a part, I wasn't sure if I could commit to doing it, cool as it looked. After I got a part, though, I found myself imagining singing it, thinking how I would play Peter. I'm not familiar with the music, but I looked at some of the clips from the movie on YouTube. By the first rehearsal I was sure.

The people running it seem incredibly talented and dedicated. We learned some of the dance steps for the audition, and I was really impressed with the choreography. It fits the music, it's fun, and it's not too predictable--it looks great. It reminds me of Andy's killer choreography from high school showchoir without the ridiculous overathleticism. The director had a "retreat" this past weekend. We all played games to get to know each other, and then we talked about the meaning of the show. A lot of the people knew the show forwards and backwards, and had a lot of interesting thoughts about it. The director, especially--he's spent his whole life with the music, he knows a lot about it, and he's always wanted to put it on. I think that's a good sign.

Peter's not a huge part--the show is about Judas, Jesus, and The Villains--but he does have some great moments. He gets to deny Jesus. (I don't know anything about acting, so I'm going to have to ask someone how to go "I DON'T KNOW HIM!!" without sounding silly. Right now it feels very self-conscious and fake.) He gets to sing a small but gorgeous duet with Mary Magdalene. Most of his time in the show is more as Number One Apostle than as a separate person. I get to sing a lot and dance a lot, which makes me happy. In high school I had some great parts, but somehow they were all mostly Non-Dancing Old Men.

So even with the time commitment, I'm very excited about this show. It seems like a great group of people.
